L04: Hardware

  • Hardware Dissection Lab

This assignment aims to enhance the understanding of electronic devices through virtual dissection. We are expected to select two electronic devices and explore their internal components, design, and functionality without physically dismantling them. This exercise encourages research, critical thinking, and comprehension of how different parts contribute to the overall function of the device.

The differences in their designs stand out when you take apart the Nintendo Switch OLED and the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio. The Switch is all about gaming on the go, so its insides are neatly organized to make the most of the small space. It's pretty straightforward to understand. The Surface Laptop Studio, aimed at professionals needing power and flexibility, is a bit more complex inside because of all its high-tech parts and that excellent hinge that lets it change shapes. Taking these gadgets apart gives you a neat peek into how they're built to fit their unique purposes, from playing games to getting work done.

  • Discussion- Hardware

    My Work:

Key components: Beginning with the CPU, or Central Processing Unit, it acts as the computer's brain, executing program instructions and managing the operation of other hardware components. The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) and the Control Unit are pivotal within the CPU. The ALU is responsible for performing mathematical and logical operations, utilizing various symbols for arithmetic and logic operations such as "and," among others. The Control Unit orchestrates the interactions among the computer's components based on the program's directives. Additionally, RAM, or Random Access Memory, plays a crucial role in storing data temporarily. Input devices like the keyboard enable users to enter data and commands, while the display screen presents information visually through text and graphics.

Functional Overview: The CPU is instrumental in processing instructions from software applications running on a device. It can execute both arithmetic and logical operations, transforming data into a more straightforward interpretation form. The CPU's significance extends beyond its computational abilities; it also oversees and regulates the activities of other computer components, underscoring its central role in computer operations.

  • Reflection Statement

For the Hardware Dissection Lab, I looked into how the Nintendo Switch OLED and the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio are put together inside, which was pretty interesting. The Switch was easier to understand because it's made portable and straightforward for gaming. At the same time, the Surface Laptop Studio had a lot more going on inside because it's designed for work stuff and has an excellent hinge that lets it change shapes. It was a bit tricky not being able to take the devices apart and relying on what others have learned about them. Still, it was cool to see how intelligent design choices can significantly affect how well a gadget works for its intended use. This assignment was a neat way to see real examples of what I've been learning about in my tech classes, like how vital parts like the CPU and RAM are in making a device do its thing.
